The National Institute of Technology (NIT) system represents India's second-tier premier engineering education ecosystem. The first NIT, then known as Regional Engineering College, was established in Srinagar in 1961. Today, the system comprises 31 NITs spread strategically across major cities and regions including Trichy, Warangal, Allahabad, Calicut, Hamirpur, Srinagar, and newer institutions in places like Agartala, Jaipur, Uttarakhand, and others. Each NIT offers 4-year BTech programs in various engineering disciplines, 2-year MTech specializations, and doctoral PhD research. NITs have attained the status of deemed universities offering significant autonomy in curriculum development and decision-making. With approximately 27,000 students across all programs, NITs provide quality engineering education at relatively affordable fees compared to private institutions. Admission to NIT undergraduate programs is through JEE Main, with individual NIT cutoff ranks determining seat allocation. NITs are known for strong faculty, good infrastructure, and emphasis on research alongside teaching.
