All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE)

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is India's principal regulatory and accreditation authority for technical education, established on November 29, 1983. Operating as an autonomous statutory body under the Ministry of Education, AICTE is responsible for maintaining quality standards in engineering, technology, management, and other technical education programs across India. AICTE accredits over 12,000 technical institutions including engineering colleges, polytechnics, and management institutes serving approximately 24 million students. The council prescribes curriculum standards, faculty qualifications, infrastructure requirements, and approval procedures for technical institutions. AICTE has introduced various policy initiatives including the Flexible Education for Technical Excellence (FEET) to streamline curriculum, mandatory internships and projects, and skill-based electives. The organization conducts periodic inspections and monitoring of accredited institutions to ensure adherence to standards. AICTE also manages scholarship programs, faculty development initiatives, and research funding schemes. The council collaborates with international bodies for curriculum alignment and recognition of Indian technical qualifications globally. AICTE approvals are mandatory for institutes offering engineering and technology undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
