Mauryan Empire

मौर्य साम्राज्य

The Mauryan Empire (322-185 BCE) was India's first great imperial power, established by Chandragupta Maurya and reaching its zenith under Ashoka. It unified most of the Indian subcontinent through military conquest and administrative reforms that shaped subsequent Indian governance.

Details

The Mauryan Empire emerged from the Magadha region, one of several competing kingdoms in post-Vedic India. Chandragupta Maurya (r. 322-298 BCE), likely of humble origins, rose to power with the strategic guidance of Kautilya, author of the Arthashastra—an ancient treatise on statecraft and administration. Kautilya's philosophy of pragmatic governance without moral constraints greatly influenced Mauryan policies. Chandragupta built a centralized administration with a standing army, secret service, and provincial governors who reported to the capital at Pataliputra (modern Patna). Ashoka Maurya (r. 268-232 BCE), Chandragupta's grandson, inherited and expanded this empire through military campaigns including the bloody conquest of Kalinga (modern Odisha), which killed approximately 100,000 people. This victory profoundly troubled Ashoka, prompting his transformation to Buddhism and renunciation of violence. He issued edicts carved on pillars and rocks across his empire, spreading Buddhist philosophy and advocating dharma (righteousness) as governance principle. These Ashoka edicts represent India's oldest datable written records and influenced Buddhist expansion to Sri Lanka, Central Asia, and China. Mauryans introduced significant economic and cultural developments: established standardized weights and measures, built an extensive road network (similar to later Roman systems), and patronized art and architecture. The empire's administrative machinery featured a sophisticated tax system, royal monopolies on salt and metals, and extensive record-keeping. However, after Ashoka's death, the empire fragmented due to weak successors, provincial rebellions, and economic strain. In 185 BCE, general Pushyamitra Shunga overthrew the last Mauryan emperor, establishing the Shunga dynasty and ending India's first great imperial experiment.
