Key facts

Details

Chandragupta Maurya was born into humble circumstances, though some traditions suggest royal lineage. He was mentored by the brilliant political strategist Kautilya (also known as Chanakya), who recognized his potential and guided his rise to power. With Kautilya's strategic genius and his own military abilities, Chandragupta defeated the reigning Nanda dynasty and established his own rule in Magadha around 322 BCE. From this base, he embarked on ambitious military campaigns to unify northern India and establish empire. Chandragupta's greatest military achievement was defeating Seleucus I Nicator, the Greek general left in control of northwest India following Alexander the Great's invasion. This victory not only expelled Greek influence from Indian territories but also established Indian dominance and led to diplomatic relations with Seleucus's kingdom in Syria. Chandragupta consolidated control over vast territories stretching from the Arabian Sea to Bengal. Beyond military conquest, he established efficient administrative systems, taxation mechanisms, and military organization. His court maintained diplomatic relations with foreign powers and facilitated trade along new routes, contributing to economic prosperity. Chandragupta's reign witnessed the decline of the old Vedic sacrifice-based state system and the emergence of complex bureaucratic administration. His legal codes and administrative structures became models for subsequent Indian empires. In an extraordinary turn, he abdicated his throne at the height of his power to pursue Jain monasticism, seeking spiritual realization. This demonstrated the continuing tension in ancient India between power and spirituality. His son Bindusara and grandson Ashoka continued expanding and stabilizing the empire, but Chandragupta's foundational work was crucial to the Mauryan Empire's subsequent glory.
