Key facts

Details

Laxmibai was born as Manikarnika in Varanasi and received education in martial arts, languages, and literature unusual for girls of her era. She married the Maharaja of Jhansi and bore a son, but her husband died when she was merely 18 years old. According to the colonial doctrine of lapse, the British East India Company annexed Jhansi following the maharaja's death, denying the widow and her adopted son inheritance rights. Rather than accepting this injustice, Laxmibai rejected British authority and declared independence for her kingdom. When the Indian Revolt erupted in 1857, Jhansi became a center of resistance. Laxmibai personally led her forces against overwhelming British military strength. She organized the defense of Jhansi fort and personally participated in cavalry charges, earning a reputation for exceptional military courage and tactical skill. Though initially victorious against British forces, she was eventually overwhelmed by superior British artillery and military organization. She escaped Jhansi and joined forces with other rebel leaders fighting the British in central India. During the siege of Gwalior, she died fighting rather than surrender, becoming a martyr for the cause of Indian independence. Laxmibai's legacy transcended gender and regionalism—she became a symbol of Indian resistance to colonialism and an exemplar of female courage and leadership. Indian nationalists celebrated her as embodying India's determination for freedom. Her name became synonymous with resistance, and she inspired subsequent generations of freedom fighters including Subhash Chandra Bose. Though her rebellion was ultimately suppressed, her defiance and courage demonstrated that Indian women were not passive victims of colonialism but active participants in the struggle for independence. Her legacy encompasses both her military heroism and her symbolic role in challenging colonial domination.
