Details

Ashoka Vardhana (c. 268-232 BCE) ascended the Mauryan throne following the death of his father Bindusara. Early accounts describe his rise as brutal and ambitious, involving the elimination of numerous half-brothers to secure power—earning him the epithet 'Chakravartin' (universal ruler). His reign's first phase focused on military consolidation and territorial expansion, continuing Bindusara's imperialist policies across the Indian subcontinent. The pivotal moment arrived with the Kalinga War around 260 BCE. Ashoka's conquest of Kalinga (modern Odisha) resulted in devastating casualties—Buddhist chronicles report 100,000 deaths, making it one of history's bloodiest conquests relative to population. Witnessing the war's aftermath—widows mourning, fields littered with bodies, cities ravaged—profoundly transformed Ashoka's worldview. He abandoned military conquest and embraced Buddhism, declaring dhamma (dharma) as his governing philosophy: righteousness, moral conduct, and non-violence. This transformation manifested in his famous edicts, carved on pillars and rocks across the empire, addressing both his subjects and neighboring kingdoms. These 34 edicts constitute humanity's oldest datable substantial records. They explicitly renounce hunting, advocate vegetarianism, and promote religious tolerance. Ashoka established hospitals for humans and animals, constructed watering holes and rest houses along trade routes, and appointed 'dharma mahamattas' (dharma officers) to disseminate Buddhist teachings. He sponsored Buddhist councils, commissioned stupas (reliquaries), and sent missions to Sri Lanka and Central Asia, ensuring Buddhism flourished beyond India. His legacy demonstrates that supreme power could serve compassionate governance, influencing Asian philosophies for millennia.
