Driving License - Official Permission to Drive

The Driving License is a mandatory official permit issued by the Regional Transport Office (RTO) for operating motor vehicles on Indian roads. It is categorized into Learner's License (valid for 6 months, allowing supervised learning) and Permanent Driving License (valid 5-20 years based on age at issuance). Separate categories exist for different vehicle types: two-wheelers (2W), light motor vehicles (LMV), heavy motor vehicles (HMV), and commercial vehicles. The application process involves registering on the VAHAN portal, booking a driving test slot, and visiting the RTO office with documents including Aadhaar card, address proof, medical fitness certificate, and photograph. Learners must possess a Learner's License for a minimum of 6 months before applying for a Permanent License. The driving test includes a written examination covering traffic rules, road safety, and vehicle knowledge, followed by a practical driving test on an RTO test track. First-time applicants aged over 40 years require medical fitness certification. Licenses issued before age 40 are valid for 20 years; those after 40 are valid for 10 years or until age 50, whichever is earlier, and then require renewal every 5 years. Renewal is simpler for unchanged details and can be done online. Suspension occurs if the driver accumulates traffic violations or commits serious offenses. Lost or damaged licenses can be replaced at RTO. A critical pitfall: driving without a valid license results in heavy penalties (Rs. 500-1,000) and can lead to criminal prosecution.
