Key facts

Details

FASTag is an advanced electronic toll collection system developed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) that revolutionized toll payment across Indian highways. The system uses Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) technology embedded in a sticker-based tag affixed to a vehicle's windshield. Each tag is linked to a prepaid account or the vehicle owner's bank account, enabling automatic toll deduction when the vehicle passes through toll plazas. FASTag has been mandatory for all vehicles since February 16, 2021; vehicles without it are charged double toll fare. Tags are issued by authorized banks and financial institutions including HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and others, usually at a cost of Rs. 100-200. Tag activation requires vehicle's registration number, owner's identity proof, and address verification. The account is recharged either through prepaid balance top-ups or direct bank account deduction. FASTag offers several benefits: faster toll clearance (vehicles pass without stopping), reduced fuel consumption, lower toll rates with time-based discounts, and transparent transaction records via SMS and mobile app. The system discounts toll rates by 0% for motorcycles and 25% for other vehicles during off-peak hours (9 PM to 6 AM). Common pitfalls include incorrect vehicle details during tag issuance (leading to mismatches at toll plazas), insufficient account balance causing payment failures, and failure to transfer tags when changing vehicle ownership. Lost or damaged tags can be reissued by the issuing bank.
