Chandrayaan-3 Moon Mission

चंद्रयान-3 चंद्र मिशन

Chandrayaan-3, launched by ISRO in July 2023, successfully landed a spacecraft on the lunar south pole in August 2023. It demonstrated India's space capabilities and made significant contributions to lunar science.

Key facts

Details

Chandrayaan-3 (Sanskrit for 'moon vehicle') was India's third lunar mission and represented a significant achievement in planetary exploration. Following Chandrayaan-2's partial success (where the orbiter succeeded but the lander crashed), Chandrayaan-3 focused solely on demonstrating safe landing and rover operations on the lunar surface. The mission launched from Sriharikota in South India aboard an LVM3 rocket and followed a complex trans-lunar trajectory to reach the Moon. The spacecraft's soft landing near the lunar south pole on August 23, 2023 made India the fourth nation (after the Soviet Union, United States, and China) to achieve a successful lunar soft landing and the first to land near the south pole—a region of significant scientific interest due to permanently shadowed craters potentially containing water ice and other valuable resources. The mission deployed a rover that conducted in-situ experiments, measured thermal properties, and explored the lunar surface for approximately 14 days, contributing valuable data to the international lunar exploration effort. Chandrayaan-3's success elevated India's space program's international standing and demonstrated technological capacity in complex deep-space missions. It validated ISRO's engineering excellence and provided insights into lunar geology. The mission strengthens India's claims to space leadership among developing nations and opens pathways for future lunar exploration, including planned human spaceflight (Gaganyaan) and collaborative international missions.
