Gaganyaan: India's Human Spaceflight Program

Gaganyaan (Sanskrit for 'sky vehicle') represents India's entry into human spaceflight and is one of the most ambitious space programs launched by any developing nation. Announced by PM Modi in 2018 with an initial target of 2022 (later revised to 2025), the program aims to send Indian astronauts to a 400km orbit around Earth for approximately 5-7 days. This would make India the fourth nation with independent human spaceflight capability, after Russia, USA, and China. The program involves developing a sophisticated crew capsule, launch vehicle modifications, life-support systems, and critical abort and recovery systems. ISRO selected and trained four Indian astronauts for the mission, all from the Indian Air Force. The development includes Test Vehicle D1 and D2 uncrewed missions to validate systems before human crew launch. The mission has significant technological, organizational, and budgetary components, requiring coordination across multiple ISRO centers and private partners. It represents India's commitment to advancing space technology and positioning the nation as a space power.
