Details
The Indian Passport is the primary international travel document issued by the Ministry of External Affairs to all Indian citizens. It serves as proof of citizenship and is required for entering most countries and undertaking international travel. Two types are available: the Ordinary passport for general citizens and the Official passport for government officials on official duty. Passports are issued in two variants: 36-page (standard) and 60-page (for frequent travelers). First-time applicants must apply online via passport.gov.in, undergo police verification, and provide documents like birth certificate, proof of residence, and identity proof. The application is processed at the nearest Passport Office or Regional Passport Office (RPO). Regular service takes 3-10 working days, while Tatkaal (emergency) service is available for urgent travel within 1-3 days at a higher fee. Passport validity is 10 years for adults (18+) and 5 years for minors (under 18). Children also require parental consent and guardian details. Passport renewal can be done through the postal system for renewals with unchanged personal details. Important limitations: passports are temporarily suspended if the applicant has an active criminal case, outstanding tax dues to the government, or is under the Enforcement Directorate's watch. Loss or damage must be reported immediately to the nearest Passport Office for cancellation and reissuance.
