Voter ID Card - Electoral Identity Document

The Voter ID Card is an official identity document issued by the Election Commission of India to all registered voters and eligible Indian citizens. Eligibility includes Indian citizenship, minimum age of 18 years, and residence in the election constituency. Applications are filed through the Voter Helpline App, online portal (election.commission.gov.in), or directly with the local election office. New voters must register to be included in the electoral roll during the final publication before elections. The voter ID is issued free of charge and remains valid for life. Its issuance typically takes 30-45 days from application. The ID serves multiple purposes: it is accepted as proof of identity for obtaining loans, opening bank accounts, and accessing government services. It also includes the voter's photograph, name, father's name, date of birth, address, and electoral roll details. Duplicate Voter IDs are issued free if the original is lost or damaged. Address changes can be updated through the same channels. One limitation: voter IDs issued before the 2014 update may not include photographs; those voters should carry additional proof of identity for voting purposes. The electoral roll is regularly revised and updated to remove deceased voters and add new eligible citizens.
