The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) system represents India's premier medical education and research infrastructure. AIIMS Delhi, established in 1956, was the first institute and set the standard for medical excellence in India. The system now comprises 22 AIIMS spread across major cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Bhopal, and newer institutions in Patna, Guwahati, Nagpur, Puducherry, and Rishikesh. Each AIIMS offers a 5.5-year MBBS program, postgraduate MD/MS specializations, doctoral research programs, and specialized training in super-specialties. AIIMS institutions are known for their triple mandate of education, research, and service delivery. Admission to undergraduate MBBS programs is exclusively through the NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) examination, with approximately 18-20 lakh candidates competing for over 3,000 seats annually. These institutes have produced thousands of physicians who work both domestically and internationally.
