Key facts

Details

Vikram Sarabhai was born in Ahmedabad into the wealthy Sarabhai family of industrialists and philanthropists. Despite his privileged background, he was dedicated to scientific advancement and national development. He studied at Cambridge University and returned to India to conduct research in cosmic rays. His scientific curiosity and recognition of space technology's potential for national development led him to propose establishing an Indian space program. In 1963, he founded ISRO, transforming India's scientific capacity. Sarabhai's vision extended beyond merely developing indigenous launch capacity. He conceived India's space program as serving development objectives—space technology for weather forecasting, telecommunications, and resource mapping to support agricultural and industrial development. This developmental approach differentiated India's space program from the superpowers' space race, focusing on practical benefits for development rather than mere technological competition. He successfully argued for indigenous development of satellites and launch vehicles despite India's limited resources, demonstrating extraordinary vision and leadership. Sarabhai's tenure as ISRO chairman saw the establishment of institutional frameworks, training of scientific personnel, and development of the Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV-3). Though he died before ISRO achieved its major success—the 1980 launch of the first indigenous satellite—he established the foundations that enabled subsequent achievements. His vision of space technology as a development tool became India's defining approach, differentiating its space program from other nations. His legacy encompasses both his scientific achievements and his vision of technology serving national development and poverty alleviation objectives.
