Key facts

Details

Ugadi is the Telugu and Kannada New Year festival, celebrated with traditional zeal in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and other regions. The term 'Ugadi' derives from Sanskrit 'Yuga' (age) and 'Adi' (beginning), meaning the beginning of a new age or epoch. The festival marks the commencement of the Chaitra month, the first month in the Hindu lunar calendar, and celebrates the onset of spring. The most distinctive feature of Ugadi is the preparation of Ugadi Pachadi, a special dish that embodies the philosophy of life. The pachadi is made with six ingredients: neem leaves (bitter), tamarind (sour), raw mango (sour), jaggery (sweet), green chili (spicy), and salt (salty). The consumption of this mixture symbolizes the acceptance of all experiences—sweet, sour, bitter, and spicy—that life presents, promoting a balanced perspective on life's ups and downs. Before the festival, homes undergo thorough cleaning and whitewashing, symbolizing the removal of negativity and the ushering in of cleanliness and purity. Intricate rangoli (colored powder designs) are created on floors, depicting themes of nature, prosperity, and divine blessings. New clothes are worn, and family members gather for meals and celebrations. The hoisting of the Gudi (a flag-like decoration) is the Marathi version of Ugadi, where a bamboo pole is decorated with a silk cloth, flowers, and neem leaves, hung outside homes as a symbol of victory and auspiciousness. Temples are visited for special prayers and to receive blessings for the new year. The festival emphasizes new beginnings, the cyclical nature of seasons and time, and the hope for prosperity, health, and happiness in the coming year. Ugadi reflects the Hindu philosophy of embracing life's diversity and maintaining equanimity in all circumstances.
