Tamil Script

Tamil script is an ancient writing system with a continuous documented history spanning more than 2,000 years. Evidence of Tamil script appears in inscriptions and literature dating to at least the 3rd century BCE, making it one of the oldest continuously used writing systems in the world. The script evolved from the Brahmi script but developed distinctive characteristics suited to the Tamil language's phonological system. Tamil script is an abugida system with 12 vowels and 18 consonants. Unlike some other South Indian scripts, Tamil uses diacritical marks to modify consonant sounds and represent vowels. The script is characterized by rounded letter forms, particularly distinct among South Indian scripts. The layout of Tamil script follows horizontal writing patterns, and the system includes ligatures for consonant clusters. The Tamil script has maintained consistency and standardization throughout its long history, visible in the continuity between ancient inscriptions and modern printed Tamil. The script has been preserved through continuous literary tradition and classical texts. In modern times, Tamil script is used in government, education, media, and literature. The script's historical significance and living use make Tamil one of the most important writing systems for South Indian languages.
