Details

Aurobindo Ghose was born in Calcutta into an English-educated Bengali family. He studied at Cambridge University and initially pursued a career in colonial administration before dedicating himself to the independence struggle. As a revolutionary nationalist, he was imprisoned by the British for sedition, but during imprisonment, he experienced profound spiritual transformation. This experience redirected his life toward spiritual seeking and philosophy rather than political activism. Upon release, he settled in French-protected Pondicherry, where he could continue spiritual work without British interference. Aurobindo developed Integral Yoga, a comprehensive spiritual philosophy that synthesized various yoga traditions—Bhakti (devotion), Karma (action), Jnana (knowledge)—into a unified path aimed at human evolution and cosmic realization. His vision encompassed not just individual enlightenment but the transformation of human consciousness and society through spiritual development. He emphasized that spirituality must engage with the material world and social evolution, not retreat from it. His philosophical works, poetry, and literary criticism demonstrated his intellectual sophistication and ability to articulate spiritual ideas in contemporary language. Aurobindo established an ashram in Pondicherry with Mirra Alfassa (known as The Mother), a French spiritual seeker who became his partner in spiritual work. Their ashram became a center for integral spiritual development combining meditation, artistic expression, and practical work. He founded Auroville, an international township near Pondicherry dedicated to spiritual ideals and human unity, which continues as a living experiment in spiritual community. His legacy encompasses his philosophical contributions, his demonstration of spirituality engaging with modernity, and his vision of human evolution toward higher consciousness.
