Hanuman's mythology centers on his unwavering devotion to Rama, making him the archetypal devotee in Hindu philosophy. Born from Vayu and Anjana (an apsara transformed into a monkey), he inherited divine characteristics while living as a monkey. His greatest feat involves crossing the ocean to reach Lanka and locate the imprisoned Sita. Single-handedly infiltrating Ravana's palace, he confirms Sita's presence and returns to Rama with news of her location. When Ravana captures and tortures him, Hanuman's tail (lit on fire) becomes a weapon itself, burning Lanka while he escapes unharmed—demonstrating that devotion protects the devoted. His construction of the Rama Setu (bridge to Lanka), accomplished through collective monkey effort under his leadership, remains history's most celebrated bridge in mythology. Hanuman's strength is described as capable of lifting mountains and challenging powerful demons. Yet his greatest power derives not from physical might but from absolute devotion—a philosophical teaching that love transcends circumstance and suffering. After Rama's departure to the Himalayas, Hanuman remained as guardian of Rama's ideals, refusing to participate in worldly pleasures. His celibacy contrasts with other characters, emphasizing that devotion requires renunciation of attachments. Hanuman worship is nearly universal across Hindu traditions. Hanuman Chalisa, a 40-verse devotional hymn composed by Tulsi Das, is recited millions of times daily. Unlike other gods requiring complex rituals, Hanuman worship requires only sincere devotion and chanting. His red vermillion-marked face adorns temples, homes, and vehicles. Tuesday is considered his day, with many undertaking fasts and devotional practices. Modern temples, particularly in cities, feature Hanuman as the primary deity, reflecting his accessibility and relevance. His message—that true strength lies in devotion and service—resonates across social classes and centuries.
