Key facts

Details

Chhath Puja is one of India's most ancient and austere festivals, celebrated primarily in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and regions with significant Bihari populations across India. The festival is unique in its demanding nature, involving rigorous fasting and devotional practices. The term 'Chhath' refers to the number six in Hindi, marking the sixth day of the lunar fortnight in the Hindu month of Kartik. The festival honors the sun god Surya, considered the sustainer of all life on earth, and Goddess Chhati (sometimes called Usha), believed to bless families with good health and prosperity. The festival extends over four days, each with specific rituals and observances. The first day, Nahai-Khai, involves bathing in rivers and eating specific foods. The second day, Kharna, involves breaking a partial fast with jaggery and rice. The third and fourth days involve complete fasting without consuming even water (Nirjal Vrat), the most demanding aspect of the festival. The most distinctive feature of Chhath Puja is the offering of Argh to the sun at sunrise and sunset on the river ghats. Women, often barefoot and clad in traditional attire, wade into rivers with offering baskets filled with fruits, sugarcane, banana, coconut, and specially prepared sweets like Thekua. They stand in the water and offer these items to the sun, chanting hymns and prayers for their families' well-being and prosperity. The rituals are accompanied by traditional songs (Chhath Geet) that narrate stories of the festival and its significance. The preparation of special foods like Thekua (a traditional sweet made with wheat flour and jaggery), kheer, and various fruit offerings is integral to the celebration. Despite modernization, the festival has retained its traditional essence, with millions participating in the rituals across the Ganges and other rivers. Chhath Puja represents the ancient Indian reverence for the sun, gratitude to nature, and the importance of family well-being and fertility in Hindu philosophy.
